Life of a compostable bag Follow the degradation of a 30 litre CompiSax bag the bag is 550x720mm 18 microns thick. We intend to photograph the degradation process of one of our liners. This is being composted in a home composter in September, so the conditions are not at the optimum. Nothing else is being put into the composter, so the conditions are well below normal composting conditions. One interesting thing is that a competitors bag put into the composter a week earlier has still NOT started to degrade!
Day in the Life
Day 1. (28th Sept 2008) Hopefully the last cut of the lawn. grass cuttings put into the liner and placed in out home composter. Day 8. 7 days later, turned the bag over and approx. 25% of the bottom of the bag has degraded. Day 14. Turned the bag over. Day 20. Approximatly 40% of the bag is degraded. Day 35 Approximatly 50% of the bag is degraded. After 6 weeks (42 days), you can see the difference between a new bag and the one from the composter, I estimate that the bag has degraded by 75%. |
